Doodlers Anonymous!

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Hey lovelies! I’m a member of this terrific site called Doodlers Anonymous, it’s practically the funnest (yes I just used a word that does not exist) website ever! It’s all in homage of the good, old fashioned doodle!

I’ve entered a doodle in the napkin doodle showcase competition!

Doodlers Anonymous Showcase 1

Here’s my doodle, seen this before? This is really old! Note how crumpled it is, I’m not really sure why I kept it. But it came in handy!

If you’re interested, head to the site and vote for my doodle! I could win a fun T-Shirt and praise and accolades! Haha!

More big news to come soon!

Love! Love!

New painting – Bang Bang

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Here she is:

Bang Bang - Carla Thursday

What do you think of her?

I really thinking that this is more of my old style, a la Monday and Thursday (PS, isn’t it fun that I can link straight to my portfolio?) But  I missed the shading of the face, and intricate colours I can achieve with watercolour pencils. I’m just not clever enough to get that with watercolour straight.

She’ll probably go up on etsy today or tomorrow. :) Comments greatly appreciated!

Also, I have had some feedback – mainly from my Dad who I sent my portfolio too last night – that the front page (eg the title page) of the website is not intuitive enough. Apparently he sat there for five minutes waiting for the rest to load and then gave up. However when I see a page like that I immediately click.

Should I add “Enter” perhaps? To make it a little more self explanatory? What do you think?

Also for lols, here is a picture of my website via my iPhone. Exciting no?

Website!

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

Yay! I’ve been working on it for a few weeks now, but my new portfolio website is finally up and running!

carlathursday.comPretty snazzy huh? I designed it in iWeb which is quite useful, and OH so easy.

www.carlathursday.comI’m quite happy with how it turned out, and luckily, one of the perks of having a lovely nerdy boyfriend, is that I had tonnes of help getting it all set up. So my boy is definitely in the good books at the moment (not that I suppose he’s ever been out of them!)

www.carlathursday.com

Go and check it out because I’d love to know what you think of it!

Tomorrow, there will be a big post with my newest painting! All finished!

xoxo Goodnight Starlight!

Reverse Cymbal Press

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

You may remember my last post about zines. In it I talked about the Reverse Cymbal Press zine pack I received.

In the pay was the zine May, which is part of the 13 Month Project, a new zine gets released each month, from December 2009 to December 2010. Inside the zine it said, “Publishing emerging artists, anyone can apply.” So I did.

Reverse Cymbal Press

Which is exciting, because I’ll be having an artwork published in the September Zine which is coming out soon!

You can check out their Facebook Group here, where you can get the zine for only $2.

Happy Zinestering!

Za za zines – Reviews!

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

I am posting this with cling wrap on my head.

No I’m not even kidding. I’m dyeing my hair with henna as we … speak, and I shall document the results soon! Just so you know, it’s really hard to scratch your head through a layer of plastic, then a layer of wet goopy hair.

In the mean time, here are some zine reviews! YAY! I ordered another grab pack from Bird in the Hand Zine shop again! And BOY did I snag a good hawl this time!

Here are some of my favourites!

This first one is by someone who identifies herself only as Mechelle B.

Bearded Chaps Mechelle B

This little zine is just what you’d expect it to be.

Bearded Chaps Mechelle B

Aren’t they just darling?

Bearded Chaps Mechelle B

My favourite part however, is that it almost isn’t a book at all.

Bearded Chaps Mechelle B

See how it all folds out? This is SO beautifully present, but still has that gorgeous hand made feel, I just can’t stop looking at them. I think Mechelle’s illustration style is really darling, and it seriously inspires me!

Next on the agenda!

Digits Elke O'Connor

This one is by Elke O’Connor, in this batch of zines I got around four of hers, and this is definitely my favourite! Beautiful black and white photography coupled by brief beautiful narrative poems.

Digits Elke O'ConnorThis is my favourite in the book, and honestly it was hard to choose.

Digits Elke O'ConnorDoesn’t it just make you shiver? I wish I was so clever!

This next one is just as brief and just as delicious.

Wheel House Chloe Siobhan

This is a little series of zines called Wheelhouse. I ordered the first four chapters, mainly because they are only 10c each. (BARGAIN!)

Each one contains a tiny chapter, each one more lovely than the last. :)

You Luke

Now this one is very enigmatic indeed, just a piece of recycled paper, with a letter from someone called Luke.

You Luke

Don’t worry. It’s someone where I will read it a lot.

Next I also ordered some zine packs. I’ve never done this before, but it was really fun (and surprising!)

Crehatetivity

Crehatetivity was fun, it had inside all sorts of little tid bits.

crehatetivity

It was a zine, and little pieces of art tied up with string! Does it get any better?

Reverse Cymbal Press

This one was done by the Reverse Cymbal Press, who make it their job to publish the work of emerging artists. I’m definitely going to get in contact with them.

Look at all the things that came inside this envelope!

Reverse Cymbal PressA booklet made with an ultra sound of someone’s kidney.

Reverse Cymbal Press

This one I think may have been bound around the wrong way, because I can see what looks like poetry inside the pages, but I can’t bring myself to unbind it and read it.

Reverse Cymbal PressI also got this little red envelope, and guess what was inside?

Reverse Cymbal PressYay! Six dollars! I’m going to buy a copy of the Big Issue with this. :)

Reverse CYmbal Press

Another sweet afirmation.

Reverse Cymbal Press

Also in the pack was the Reverse Cymbal Press Monthly zine, which I am definitely thinking of getting a subscription to. I’m also thinking of submitting some artworks. It features some great illustrations, and some really lovely (and thought provoking) writings. If you can snag a copy, they’re cheap cheap!

Reverse Cymabl Press

Lastly. My favourite item that came in the pack was this. I dont’ know who it was by, but it’s an altered book.

Reverse Cymbal Press

As you can see it’s The Whispering Land by Gerald Durrell, but the artist, has painted the cover black so it looks like this.

Reverse Cymbal Press

And on each page, they’ve written a word. So it’s like a story within a story. It’s just DEVINE. It is literally now one of my prized possessions. Here are the first few pages.

ThisIsNotAnArtprankNo indeed, it is not.

Whoever these Reverse Cymbal Pressians art, I am a big fan.

(Almost) all images have been linked back to where you can purchase them at the Bird in the Hand Zine Shop. Check them out, they’re all marvelous reads.

Speaking of zines, my lovely friend Ryan and I have finally gotten our act together and are starting a zine collaboratively. His words my art. Fun no?! We’ll talk more about it soon.

Now, it’s perfect timing for me to go take this gunk out of my hair and admire my new glossy locks!

More updates soon chickens!

Journals

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

I used to keep tonnes of journals. I’m talking five at a time, full of sketches and collages, thoughts, dreams I’d had.

Anyway, I’ve really been inspired by the lovely journals in some of the blogs I follow.  Here are some pages from old journals I’ve done.

Sometimes you wake up and all you’ve got left is a mental Polaroid of a solitary moment on the other side.

There’s a chrysalis and a woman with underwater hair sleeps inside. She seems to shift like a sweet shimmering droplet of glass colored water. She must live deep in this miasma as if trapped by some wild metaphor, created purely by the predilection for perfection. All is monochrome, like breath on a mirror, making illusions like the sky with the intake – outtake – sigh.

On her surreal white skin an angry vision which is like dust & fiery triumph claws through the silhouette of pain & passion in time. It breaks the metaphysical, the ethereal and unravels the silence with flowing thoughts and clashing voices. The crashing of waves and the foam of the sea.

Can skin be sewn back together?

Her eyes would probably be beautiful if they were open.

My favourites are from the notebook doodles.

Aren’t they the lovliest?

I have a really lovely green journal with lots of pages, that I’m really going to try and use more often. I’ve used it to write about nightmares I’ve had which helps deal with them I think, and I also like to use it for random thoughts, but I’m going to try and make more art and share it! That is my pledge to you!

Speaking of pledges! I’ve got something inportant to post about real soon! I’ll keep you posted! (Worst pun ever!)

xo Love and art!

I’m back… no really this time.

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

So, I’ve been neglecting you darling blog. In my defense I’ve been really sick the past few days and have been neglecting a lot of things!

I’m home sick today, and it’s 10:24 and I’m still in my pajamas. Sexy, I know. I spent all yesterday in bed with a fever hallucinating that I had a clone. (I wish I was kidding! I really was SICK!)

So, because I have a whole day to recover, I am going to use this post to tell you all about the things I have been doing, instead of the things I SHOULD be doing!

I finally picked up my prints, and boy are they beautiful. The guy who does them was waiting for ink, so they’ve been a long time coming, but it was worth the wait, and I hope my buyers think so too. :) I’m going to wrap them up today and ship them off! Sadly, my camera is out of battery otherwise I would take some photos!

My etsy store is really coming along! I’ve been featured in treasuries three times, and I’ve had three custom requests, which is good news! This was definitely helped by the giveaway over at Cutestew! The winner was announced yesterday, I sure hope my print likes living with her.

In other news, I have a painting that I want to finish, and I think I will do that today. I also have a fun doodle, that I am going to turn into a painting.

What do you think of her? I think most people would be surprised by how much doodling I get done when I should be working!

I spent my Sunday night re-decorating! There’s a wall in my study that has always been blank, so I decided to jazz it up a bit with some prints off inspirational art I’ve had lying around.

Fun no?

I wish I could credit each of these artists, because they inspire me so, but it really would take me ages. So, let me just make it clear that NONE of this art is mine.

Whenever, I’m feeling stuck in a rut, putting things up on the wall ALWAYS makes me feel better.

I love this time of year, the cold of winter is still around, but the sun is hot, and you can smell summer coming. The jasmine is flowering outside my bedroom and I can smell it when the window is open.

For the first day back on prac at school, I painting my fingernails school-appropriate-pink and wore these awesome black pants I had bought. When I turned up, the kids complained. THEY COMPLAINED! The said, “Miss, why are you all in black? You just don’t look like yourself!” “Miss, where are your coloured tights?”

So, on Tuesday. I painted my nails not-so-school-appropriate-blue-green-and-orange.

I also wore yellow tights and a purple shirt, and they were much more impressed. :)

I really want to make / buy some business cards to put with my paintings. But, instead of spending lots of money I had a fab idea!

Instead of having cards made, I’m going to get some custom stamps made. Similar to these ones on etsy!

Custom Art Mounted Rubber Stamp with Handle – by terbearco

I’m thinking of getting two stamps made one with my “signature” for the front of the card.

Then I could have another with all my details for the other side of the card. What do you think? I love the idea of making my own cards, instead of those generic bought ones!

Well. I am going to go have a shower, wrap up these prints and finish my painting. Maybe once my camera batteries have charged, I’ll post a photo later this afternoon.

xoxo

IT’S GIVEAWAY TIME!

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Yep, that’s right. I’m having a give away and it’s being run by Melly K of Cute Stew. November boy is looking for a new home!

Click for full view!

This charming print is a reproduction of the watercolour, pencil and ink portrait of the month of November. The original painting is only 1 x 2 inches however the reproduction has been enlarged to 8 x 11 inches and is professionally printed onto archival German Etching paper. The paper is very thick (380gsm) and beautifully textured. Though this is a reproduction, the subtle bleeding of the paper makes this print look strikingly like an original. Because the paper is archival, it will literally last a lifetime before fading. Print comes packaged with cardboard backing for protection. Includes white boarder for framing. Signed and dated by the artist (That’s me!) It’s worth $25 American. :)

If you would like to win this print head over to Cute Stew for details!

Her blog is the cutest! I hope you win!!! :D

Zines, zines, zines!

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Well on Tuesday night I got a package! A couple of weeks ago, I ordered a $20 grab pack from The Bird in the Hand Zine store.

If you are wondering:

zine (an abbreviation of the word fanzine, or magazine; pronounced /ˈziːn/ “zeen”) is most commonly a small circulation publication of original or appropriated texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-published work of minority interest usually reproduced via photocopier on a variety of colored paper stock.

I love you wikipedia.

ANYWAY! I’ve never order zines online before, and this was a big adventure because I had NO IDEA what was going to be arriving in the mail, and let me tell you. I WAS NOT dissapointed!

On Tuesday night, I kitted myself out in pajamas and a torch and huddled under the covers to read my new haul.

So, in honour of my new zines, here are some short reviews of some of the ones I received in the mail, and a few of my old favourites.

As you can see, this first piece of deliciousness is called All In a Days Worth and it’s by Dawn Tan. I got this one at the Sticky Institute in Melbourne. This is a little book dedicated to a whole day in Dawns life, where she illustrates EVERYTHING she eats or uses.

It is seriously just the loveliest thing. Her illustrations are so gorgeous. It really opened my eyes to just how much stuff we use on a day to day basis. You should definitely check out her blog here: Hand Made Love because it is full of other loveliness.

NEXT on the agenda is one of my recent purchases.

This one is by a girl known only as Amanda. Similarly to all in a days worth, this zine is focus all on the  25th of July. It includes writing and little excerpts from her diaries entries on previous July 25ths.

This was created specifically for the 24 Hour Zine Thing which is a zine challenge that “asks zinesters to create a 24-page zine from conception to final product in 24 hours straight”. I think it’s really lovely that Amanda’s 24 zine is just about 24 hours.

This next zine is called Fives and Even Numbers : Short Fiction.

Seriously, how gorgeous is this cover pattern? It’s by Jennie Knight and is a series of (very) short stories.

To me, this is exactly what short fiction should be. Just a little snippet of someone’s life, they don’t really have beginning or ends, but your imagination creates the remainder of the story. I love it.

This one is compiled  Michelle Vandermeer (who did all the illustrations) with words by a host of writers. All of the works are focuses around the Laundromat. I think the design of this one is really amazing. For a zine, it is seriously sharp and professional.

Forgive my terrible photo, it doesn’t do it justice.

I’ve only been to a laundromat once, when I was holidaying. And I just loved it. I really  loved the mundane-ness of it all, almost as if my life could be defined by the pieces of clothing swirling around in there.

If someone found my wet clothes, who would they think I was? The thought intrigues me. You should check out Michelle’s blog Shelbyville, she makes beautiful handmade accessories as well as zines!

As you can seen, this zine of mine is a bit ratty. Mainly because it’s been in my possession for a few months now, and I carried it around in my bag for a good bit of that time.

This is a full fledged novel, by an anonymous author. I love love love this zine. It’s written by type writer and bound with duct tape and string, and man is is thought provoking.

I don’t know if this is truth or fiction, part of me hope’s it’s a true story part of me really hopes it’s just fiction, but the main character is so truthful. I just ache for him. If you can somehow get a hold of a copy, snatch it up.

My last zine is by someone known only as Anney B. Apparently it’s called Little House (I got this info from the Bird in the Hand Zine Shop Website) and it’s so lovely. No words need. Just beautiful pictures.

Something about turning these soft textured paper, to find another little blue house on the next page really touched something inside me. It made me so nostalgic for my childhood. I keep going back to it, and turning each page, even thought I’ve seen them so many times all ready. You can read Anney’s Blog Here: Anney B.

One day soon, I’m going to get my act together and finish my own zine and get it out there!

If you’d like to order zines from the Bird in the Hand Zine Shop.

Here is their shop. Here is their website. And here is their facebook page!

I hope you discover zines, because they hold ALL sorts of magic in their hand printed pages.

xo Love and art!

Etsy Feature

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Well! I just got a lovely message from Sharon (etsy user KnotOriginal). She’s featured my print September Boy – Close up in her latest September treasury! Which I think is part of the Artisan Gallery!

Here is the print itself.

And here he is featured along with all sorts of other lovely etsy finds! Ones that you should definitely check out!

What a delightful surprise.

I also just got a message saying that a package has arrived! I’ve ordered a whole lot of things, but I’m hoping it’s a box of zines from Bird in the Hand zine shop!

I’ll let you know when I get home!! :)
